Consultancy Services for Design Update & Construction Supervision for Upgrading of Kapchorwa – Suam

Client: Uganda National Roads Authority
Location: Uganda
Status: Completed 2024

Project Description

LEA India provided consultancy services for design review and construction supervision for the upgradation of the 73-km long Kapchorwa-Suam Road from gravel to bituminous standard. This was a multinational road project between Uganda and Kenya commissioned with financial assistance from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and implemented by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).

The 73-km section between Kapchorwa and Suam is located in Eastern Uganda and traverses north of Mt. Elgon National Park, ending at Suam at the border with Kenya. This multinational Uganda-Kenya project aims to enhance road access to socio-economic facilities and transport service quality in eastern Uganda. The road upgrade is expected to improve the beneficiaries’ standard of living, support the tourism industry, and promote regional integration and cross-border trade with Kenya. The narrow road was dangerous in bad weather, with tight bends, steep gradients, landslide-prone slopes, and a deep valley, all lacking safety barriers, endangering drivers and other commuters.

This challenging road section has been upgraded to a two-lane road with paved shoulders and improved horizontal and vertical geometry. Rigid pavement is provided at critical locations, along with slope protection using bioengineering and rockfall fencing. Eleven new bridges were constructed, and road safety was enhanced with flexible and rigid crash barriers, retro-reflective signage, and markings. Solar-powered streetlights improve nighttime visibility, and a One Stop Border Post at the Uganda-Kenya border is nearing completion to facilitate trade.

The Consultancy Services for Design Update and Construction Supervision for Upgrading of Kapchorwa - Suam Project stands out as one of LEA India’s pioneering international endeavours, enhancing our expertise in cross-country infrastructure development and establishing robust business ties with a government agency dedicated to transforming Uganda’s infrastructure.
