Located in Norfolk County, the Long Point causeway is the only link between mainland southern Ontario and the Long Point peninsula. In 2019, Norfolk County undertook a detailed design and environmental assessment study for the replacement of the Big Creek Bridge along the causeway. Construction staging to maintain traffic posed several challenges to ensure that the roadway footprint was minimized within the surrounding Big Creek National Wildlife Area, resident to Species at Risk (SAR) habitat.
LEA Consulting Ltd. was retained by the contractor Sierra Bridge Inc. to provide environmental services during construction. Bridge replacement commenced in 2021 and included a requirement to develop Long Point Causeway Bridge Replacement and implement a project specific Environmental Management Plan. During construction, LEA completed over 360 daily environmental inspections to review and ensure the function of various protection measures, including temporary wildlife exclusion fencing along the project limits. Daily wildlife sweeps were also undertaken by LEA to relocate any wildlife that were encountered, including SAR. During the project several species and SAR were successfully relocated outside of the work area following permit and approval protocols.
The project was successfully completed in early 2023, with key input from LEA’s environmental team’s work within this environmentally sensitive area.
