Eglinton Crosstown Light Rapid Transit

Client: Metrolinx
Location: Canada
Status: Ongoing

Project Description

The Eglinton Crosstown is a 20-km light rapid transit(LRT) line that will run across Eglinton Avenue between Mount Dennis (Weston Road) and Kennedy Station in Toronto. This line will consist of an elevated section in the west and a 10-km twin tunneled underground section between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The transit line will continue east on an at-grade, right-of-way separated from traffic to Kennedy Station.

LEA’s involvement in the ECLRT dates back to the initial planning and conceptual design in 2011 and has continued to present day as part of the Crosslinx Design Build team. LEA provided lead structural engineering design and construction support services at three below grade stations (Eglinton Interchange Station, Forest Hill Station, Avenue Road Station) and civil engineering and utilities relocation design services at the Eglinton Interchange Station.

Eglinton Interchange Station was one of the greatest challenges to the project, requiring LEA’s top team of structural engineers to develop a solution to support the existing subway while the new LRT station facility was constructed beneath the existing subway. Allowable tolerances for movement of the active overhead subway facility were limited to 3 mm or less… approximately the thickness of 2 Indian rupee coins or 1 ½ Canadian dollar (loonie) coins.
