The Honorable Prime Minister of India launched the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) with a budget outlay of INR 200 Billion (CAD 3.8 Billion), aimed at abating pollution, conservation, and rejuvenation of the National River Ganga by integrating previous and ongoing initiatives, enhancing efficiency, extracting synergies, and supplementing them with comprehensive and coordinated interventions. LEA became integral to this mission in 2017 when we were chosen as the Environmental and Social Audit Consultant by the Ministry. The River Ganga is polluted due to organic waste, sewage, industrial waste, trash, polyethylene, cans, clothes, food, etc. The pollution is due to urbanization, rapid industrialization, population growth, and the consequent loading of pollutants. LEA audited the environmental and social safeguard implementation with respect to various interventions under Namami Gange which included sewage treatment infrastructure, river front development, public awareness, and Ganga Gram (construction of toilets in identified gram panchayats situated along the banks of River Ganga). Services offered by the project include:
Audit of Environment and Social Management Framework implementation
Training and capacity building of stakeholder agencies
Extensive Field Visits: 125 Project locations in 5 basin states
Interacted with State Program Management Groups, Executing Agencies, Contractors, Project affected groups
